Food is the hardest thing to photograph badly and get away with, because everyone knows what it should look like. Puw re-lights the plate you photographed on your phone in about twenty seconds at 4K — the food stays the food, the light stops being a kitchen ceiling.
Almost every problem with a food photo is a lighting problem wearing a different hat. The sauce looks grey because the room is lit at 3000K. The salad looks flat because the light came from behind the camera. The steam is invisible because there is nothing bright behind it. None of that is fixed by a sharper lens or a better plate — it is fixed by moving the light, which is the part a render can do after the fact.

What to shoot.
- 01Overhead, dead flat
The crop every delivery app and social grid defaults to. Camera parallel to the table, not tilted.
- 02The 45° angle
Where height and layering read. A burger and a bowl of soup are different photographs for this reason.
- 03Straight-on, at plate level
For anything stacked — pancakes, burgers, cakes. Overhead flattens them into a circle.
- 04The first bite or the cut
A fork lifted, a yolk broken, a slice pulled. The single most-saved kind of food photo there is.
- 05The pour
Sauce, syrup, coffee, oil. Motion in a still frame makes the plate feel alive rather than staged.
- 06Ingredients before cooking
Raw components laid out. Sells the sourcing and the care in one frame.
- 07A close-up of texture
Crumb, char, crust, grain. Fill the frame — this is the shot that makes people hungry.
- 08The whole spread
Several dishes together. Different job from a single plate: it sells a table, not an item.
- 09Hands in shot
Holding, passing, seasoning. Gives scale and makes it a moment rather than a product.
- 10The packaging, if it travels
For delivery, the box is half the experience and almost never photographed.
What goes wrong most often.
- Shooting under the kitchen or dining-room lights. Warm overhead light turns whites yellow and sauces grey — a plate carried to a window for ten seconds is a completely different photograph, and gives the render far more to work with.
- Lighting from behind the camera. Food needs light from the side or behind it to show texture and steam; front light flattens everything into a colour swatch.
- Photographing the dish after it has sat for five minutes. Nothing recovers a wilted garnish or a set sauce — the render fixes light, not time.
- Cranking saturation so the tomato reads redder than the tomato. The customer compares the plate in front of them to your photo, and loses either way.
- Shooting every dish at a different angle and time of day, then wondering why the menu grid looks like a jumble. Same setup, one batch, one mode.
Questions people ask.
Does it change what the food actually looks like?
In Precise mode it changes the light and the colour balance, not the dish. Nothing is added to the plate and nothing is taken off it — which matters, because a food photo is a promise about what arrives.
Can it fix a photo taken in bad restaurant lighting?
That is the main thing it does. Warm overhead lighting is the single most common problem in food photos and the one a render handles best. It cannot recover a completely blown-out or pitch-black frame.
Do I need a proper camera or a lightbox?
No. A recent phone resolves more than enough detail; lighting is the constraint, and that is the part being replaced. A window is still worth walking to.
Will it work for delivery app listings?
Yes — and shoot overhead for those. Delivery platforms crop hard to a square or a wide banner, so a centred overhead plate survives the crop while a 45° shot loses its edges.
Can I do a whole menu in one go?
Yes. Every dish renders at the same time with its own mode and its own note, so a twelve-dish seasonal change is one pass rather than twelve.
What about packaged food with labels on it?
Printed text and logos are held fixed through the render, so ingredient lists, weights and brand marks come back exactly as photographed rather than approximated.
