Puw for Etsy

Photos for Etsy listings, across every crop

Etsy recommends 2000 px on the shortest side, requires the first photo to be at least 635 px to avoid ranking lower, accepts JPG, GIF or PNG, and allows up to 20 photos per listing. It also re-crops your image across several pages, so a frame has to work square and rectangular.

Etsy is a marketplace of small sellers, which means your listing is judged against forty other handmade ceramic mugs photographed on forty different kitchen tables in forty different lights. Consistency is a competitive advantage here in a way it is not on a marketplace of big brands — a shop whose twenty listings look like one shoot reads as a business, and a shop whose listings each look like a different afternoon reads as a hobby, whatever the actual quality of the work.

Etsy re-crops listing photos across several pages, so a frame that works square and rectangular survives everywhere. A first photo under 635 px is described as showing up lower in search.

What actually moves the needle here

The first photo is a ranking input

Etsy says a first photo under 635 px shows up lower in search. It is the one image with a stated consequence attached.

Your photo will be re-cropped without you

Listing images get used across several pages at different ratios. Leave room around the product so a square crop does not cut into it.

Shop consistency is the differentiator

Twenty listings that look like one shoot beat twenty better individual photos that look unrelated. Run the whole shop through in one batch.

Twenty slots is a lot of room

Hero, angle, scale, texture, in use, packaging, variants — most sellers use six of the twenty available.

Questions people ask.

What size should Etsy listing photos be?

Etsy recommends at least 2000 px on the shortest side, and says the first photo should be at least 635 px to avoid appearing lower in search. Files under 1 MB upload fastest, in JPG, GIF or PNG.

Will my product labels and text stay correct?

Yes — printed text and logos are held fixed through the render. On a marketplace an altered model number or ingredient list is a compliance problem, not just an aesthetic one.

Can I get a plain white background?

Not as a cutout. Puw re-lights the scene the product is in and does not produce a transparent PNG, so for a strict white-background requirement you need a background remover as well.

How much does a whole shop cost to render?

Two hundred listings at five photos each is 1,000 renders — $79 on the Studio plan, about eight cents an image.
